Coming Home: Milk, Honey, Healing

an initiative by Sarah Rose Smiley with Taewee Kahrs

Coming Home was created in an attempt to disrupt mainstream, homogeneous representations of survivors. It details the process of moving through hurt, the non-linearity of healing, and the balm that can come from reclaiming parts of yourself through art.

I aim to challenge this harmful monolith of representation by flooding the mainstream with what it sorely lacks: honest, survivor-centered images depicting the pain, loss, joy, and triumph that is the healing process after trauma. Survivors deserve to see themselves represented, they deserve to feel at home in their bodies, and they deserve a recognition of the loss they have endured.
